Why Long-Term Care Planning May Be the Most Important Conversation You’ll Have
If you’re new to the insurance industry or simply new to long-term care insurance (LTCI), it’s easy to feel intimidated. The products can seem complex, underwriting has its own language, and clients often don’t know where to begin. The good news? You don’t have to become an expert overnight.
Long-term care planning is less about selling insurance and more about helping clients answer one important question: “If I ever need extended care, who will provide it and how will I pay for it?” Every advisor should be prepared to help clients answer that question.

Why Long-Term Care Matters
People are living longer than ever before. While that’s something to celebrate, longevity also increases the likelihood that clients will need assistance with everyday activities at some point in retirement. Many clients assume Medicare will cover those costs. Unfortunately, Medicare generally pays for short-term skilled medical care, not ongoing custodial or personal care, such as assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, or supervision due to cognitive impairment. Without a plan, clients often rely on:
- Personal savings and retirement assets
- Investment accounts that may be affected by market conditions
- Family caregivers
- Home equity
- Medicaid, after spending down assets
Having this conversation before a health event occurs gives clients more options and more control over their future.

Start with Planning, Not Products
One of the biggest mistakes new agents make is leading with a product. Instead, lead with planning. Ask questions like:
- If you needed care tomorrow, where would you want to receive it?
- Who would coordinate your care?
- Would your spouse or children be able to help?
- How would paying $6,000-$10,000+ per month for care affect your retirement?
These conversations naturally lead to discussions about solutions.
Learn the Four Primary Planning Options
As you begin working with clients, you’ll generally encounter four categories of solutions:
1. Traditional Long-Term Care Insurance
- Dedicated protection for long-term care expenses
- Typically provides the greatest leverage for premium dollars
- Best suited for clients in good health who qualify medically
2. Hybrid Life Insurance or Annuities with Long-Term Care Benefits
- Combines life insurance or an annuity with long-term care benefits
- May provide a death benefit if care is never needed
- Appeals to clients concerned about “using it or losing it”
3. Short-Term Care Insurance
- Covers shorter care events
- Often more accessible from an underwriting standpoint
- Can be an excellent solution when traditional LTCI isn’t available
4. Crisis Planning Solutions
For clients who waited too long to plan, options such as Medicaid Compliant Annuities and other asset preservation strategies may still help protect assets and provide care funding. Not every client fits every product, and that’s okay.
Be a Good Field Underwriter
This should be your first place to start after initiating a conversation about extended care planning. Not everyone will qualify for long-term care insurance. That’s why it’s vital to gather good information. A quality intake form, prescription history, and health discussion often provide enough information to determine which carriers and products are worth exploring.
Keep Your First Conversations Simple
Clients don’t need an explanation of elimination periods, inflation protection, reimbursement versus cash benefits, or partnership programs during the first meeting. Instead, focus on three questions:
- Do they understand the risk?
- Do they want a plan?
- Are they willing to explore their options?
Everything else comes later.

The Best Time to Start Is Today
Many advisors avoid long-term care because they believe it’s complicated. But the conversation is straightforward: People are living longer. Care is expensive. Medicare won’t cover most long-term care expenses. Every client deserves a plan.
As a new agent, you don’t need to know every product detail to make a difference. You simply need to start the conversation and partner with experienced professionals who can help guide the process. At Krause, that’s exactly what we’re here for. Your first long-term care case doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to start with a conversation.
